Fortress of Solitude — Loose Print

About an hour before sunrise I set up the large format camera in the Alabama Hills and waited for the sky to do what only a clear, cold desert morning can. The gradient came on slowly — deep indigo pressing down from above, then violet, then rose, then a band of warm peach hugging the horizon where the Sierra faded to blue silhouette. The moon hung alone overhead, unhurried, watching. Below, the granite formations jutted from the desert floor like a crystalline outpost — remote, sharp, belonging to no one. The whole scene reminded me of a fortress built for solitude, a place you go not to escape the world but to finally hear yourself think. A sanctuary held between stone and sky, where the only company is the wind and the slow turning of the moon.
